Floating several hundred feet in the air in front of the tentacled head was a girl. She wore a black-and-green uniform with the stylized symbol of a kerosene lamp on her chest, and she was glowing faintly green. Her hand was raised into the air in a defiant fist, and a beam of energy rose from the ring she wore and extended into space. She floated backwards, facing the wading leviathan, her bushy brown hair thrown into her face by the howling wind.
She hoped she was not too late and that her signal would reach its target.
Then something emerged from the clouds: a terrible reptilian form, golden red, with gems and coins encrusting underside. The sound of its wings was like the snapping of necks. It flew beside the floating girl.
